Mid-range Mirrorless cameras (2015)

One of the most significant developments in digital photography has been the introduction of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. By removing the mirror and optical viewfinder, manufacturers are able to make their cameras smaller, without compromising ergonomics, performance and, in most cases, image quality.
Over the past year we’ve seen more growth in the consumer/mid-level mirrorless category than nearly any other camera class. These cameras are a step up from their entry-level counterparts and generally sell for between $500 and $1000 body only, or between $600 and $1100 with a kit lens. The following cameras are included in this roundup:
  • Fujifilm X-E2
  • Sony a6000
  • Sony a5100
  • Olympus OM-D E-M10
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM5
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7
Since the range in pricing is so great, we believe there are two groups of people who may be considering cameras in this class. One group wants a more compact, secondary camera in addition to their DSLR, something that still offers ample controls. The other is the photographer for whom this will be their only camera - someone who wants DSLR image quality and control without the additional size or weight.

5 reasons to use primes on Panasonic GH4

Stacked Prime Lenses
Prime lenses are awesome. If you don’t know what makes prime lenses so great, you will after this post.

A PRIMER ON PRIMES

prime is a lens with a single focal length. Unlike a zoom lens, the only way you get closer to or farther from your subject when using a prime lens is by moving the camera itself.
Prime lenses are referred to simply by their focal length. For example, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm are all common focal lengths for prime lenses and is how they are generally referred to as well.

SONY FE FULL FRAME E MOUNT LENS LIST

Over the last year Sony has really worked hard on updating it's E mount lens lineup. It's something that they seem to take very serious and if you're an owner of a Sony A7, A7r, or A7s you are very fortunate.
Since there seems to be a new lens every few months I've decided to keep a consolidated list of all available native full frame E mount lenses that I find hoping one day I'll be able to afford and test all of them. :)
I was about to update my metabones adapter to the MK IV, but now, I think that money would be better spent on new glass. We'll see. I'm not fully on board yet with selling all my Canon lenses as Canon will have to compete with Sony landscape shooters sooner or later.

High end compact cameras guide

It’s no secret that smartphones and their increasingly powerful cameras are eating away at the sales of traditional low-end compacts. As a result, camera manufacturers are creating compacts that offer radically different feature sets than their smartphone counterparts.
Optical zooms with fast glass, the ability to capture in Raw, large sensors (compared to those in smartphones), and even EVFs are finding their way into this class of camera. And while they may lack the dedicated controls of their bulkier enthusiast compact cousins, many of them offer comparable image quality in a sleeker package.
  • Canon PowerShot G7 X
  • Canon PowerShot S120
  • Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II
  • Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III
  • Fujifilm XQ1
  • Nikon Coolpix P340
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1
Note: We purposely excluded the Nikon Coolpix A, Ricoh GR, Sigma Quattro and Sony RX1R as they will be included in a separate roundup of single focal length compact cameras, to be published in the coming weeks.
In the following pages, you'll find what we liked and didn't like about each camera, and links to our test scenes and real-world galleries to give you a sense of how it performs in a variety of situations.

Sony A7II Sensor Review and Test Results

sony-a7ii-sensor-review-test-results

DxOMark published their sensor review and test results for the Sony Alpha A7 II full-frame mirrorless camera which is currently priced for$1,700 at Amazon.
Sony A7II sensor review shows the camera scored a point of 90 and ranks in joint 11th place on the DxOMark database alongside the original A7 model also with 90 points.
As expected the scores for Colour, Dynamic Range and ISO are predictably similar with both models offering great image quality.

Sony A7II vs A7R vs A7S Comparison

sony-a7ii_a7r_a7s_scores
Improvements to build quality and handling alongside the addition of a new sensor shift image stabilisation system make the new Sony A7II an even more appealing prospect to both serious amateur and professional photographers. Packing essentially the same 24.2Mp full frame sensor there’s no discernable improvement in image quality over its predecessor the Sony A7, but it still remains one of the best scoring sensors on our database ranking in 11th place overall.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7 Preview

After several iterations, Panasonic’s GF compact mirrorless camera line has gradually settled into a comfortable position in the market: providing mass market point-and-shoot appeal while giving photographers the option to fully control settings should the need arise. The latest camera in the series, the DMC-GF7, continues this trend. It’s built around the same 16MP sensor as other recent Panasonics including the GX7, GM1, and GM5, so we expect the image quality to be on par with those cameras.
Where the GF7 diverges from recent GF-series bodies is style. It eschews the rounded, plastic edges that have defined recent GF cameras and instead takes more traditional design cues from Panasonic’s minuscule GM-series cameras. Panasonic explains that while the GM1 has proven popular, a lot of people "just wanted a little bit more camera to hold on to". The result is a body roughly 20% larger than the GM1, but with the same basic control layout and internals.

Is H.265 coming to the A7s to allow internal 4K recording?

A visitor of the CES show shared  the following info:
Speaking to Sony rep at CES, he indicated H.265 may be coming to A7x platform. In theory, this could allow A7S to output 4K (H.265) to the SD card due to the lower bitrate possibility. Would eliminate the requirement for external HDMI recorder for 4K, as long as you are OK with the H.265 compression.
The Samsung NX1 uses the H.265 codec for 4K recording. But I really don’t know if Sony will do this. There may be overheating issue when recording 4K on the A7s. But if Sony would find a way to add internal 4K recording I would certainly be happy!

Alleged Canon EOS Rebel 750D Spec List

A spec list we were given has the upper end Rebel split into two different cameras, a 750D and a 760D. The North American naming was not given for the cameras. We expect an announcement for a new Rebel(s) to come in the next  few weeks.
The biggest thing I notice in this specification list is the 24.2mp image sensor. It has been assumed by most that any new Rebel would have the 20.2mp sensor from the EOS 70D.
Canon Rebel 750D/760D Specifications
  • Full HD movies, MP4 format, HDR movie, automatic shooting modes (EOS 750D )
  • 24.2MP sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor
  • ISO 100-12,800 range
  • Flicker Detection technology
  • Five frames per second continuous shooting mode
  • 19 cross-type AF point system
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III
  • Rear Quick Control Dial (EOS 760D )
  • Creative movie modes (EOS 760D )
  • Wi-Fi and NFC
This information comes from an unknown source and I’m hoping for some clarification on the model split if it is indeed true. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of difference between the 2 models. Please notice the [CR1] rating on this post, and treat it accordingly.

Entry-Level Mirrorless Cameras, 2014 edition

Entry-level mirrorless cameras provide a nice middle ground between fixed-lens point-and-shoots and lower-end DSLRs. It's an ever-growing category with options for photographers of varying skill level and intentions. The common factors in this class are the huge step up in image quality over most compacts and smartphone cameras and the friendly interfaces.

The story of the entry-level mirrorless category is a tale of sensor sizes. Sony, Fujifilm and Samsung's NX3000 use APS-C-sized sensors. Nikon's 1-series, and the Samsung NX Mini use a 1"-type sensor that's considerably larger than that of most enthusiast compacts. It's the increase in sensor size that makes much of the image quality benefits of these cameras possible - larger sensors are able to gather more light and generally produce less-noisy and higher dynamic range images. Pentax's tiny QS1 is an outlier - it has a 1/1.7"-type sensor, as found in many advanced point-and-shoots.

Sensor size is not the only thing that matters though; for many, connectivity is king when considering an entry-level mirrorless camera. The majority of the cameras here can be used in conjunction with a smartphone, to share instantly with the world. Some do it better than others, and some don't do it at all.
Another important factor to consider when purchasing an entry-level mirrorless camera is the quality of the kit lens included. A fast kit lens (smaller F-number), with a wider range of focal lengths will do the camera you choose more justice than a slower lens, or one with a lesser zoom range. This is true regardless of the size of the camera’s sensor. Here are the cameras we've identified current entry-level mirrorless models:
  • Fujifilm X-M1
  • Fujifilm X-A1
  • Sony a3000
  • Samsung NX3000
  • Samsung NX Mini
  • Pentax Q-S1
  • Nikon 1 S2
  • Nikon 1 J4
  • Olympus Pen E-PL7
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1
